Kinky Boots is a concert musical that tells the story of Charlie Price, a failing shoe factory, and a saving grace named Lola. As the associate sound designer and mixer, I drafted the paper work and worked closely with the sound designer (Joe Payne) to help his and the director's (Rusty Mowery) vision come to life. Using a Yamaha CL5, I was tasked with setting up all the console scenes (which ended up being 234 in total) with DCA assignments and other parameter changes. The show featured 28 wireless mics and a 11 piece band, which needed 22 mics, that was stationed in the pit in front of the stage. The system included 30 speakers (9 of which were monitors) and a headphone monitoring setup for the band which allowed for more specific mixes between each member. This show proved to be Clarence Brown Theatre's biggest musical—and mine too—with almost all of the 72 channels being used.
I was also tasked with creating house music for an atmospheric moment in the show. When Charlie Price & friends finally make it to Milan, we needed music that felt ready for fashion week. I produced a beat (that Joe Payne added a low pass filter to) to create the illusion and ambience of a runway's thumping backstage (which was mainly to distract the audience from the noise and movement of the stage crew behind the curtain).
